Carrara and Cinque Terra

Cinque Terra is a little fishing area made up of cinque (the number five in Italian, pronounced chinque) little towns. These towns have been fishing and grape growing towns for a whole lot of years, the region is famous for wines they produce (don’t worry everyone, I didn’t personally test any) as well as fish and other local cuisine. But mostly Cinque Terra is famous for it’s beauty, you can get a little a taste of that by looking at the some pictures that hopefully you’ll be able to enlarge bellow.

It was amazing to see the ingenuity that people posses, all the hills in sight were terraced and planted with grapes. They even have a clever little “train” system for gathering the grapes from each level, there is a single little track that a single little car rides up and down the steep hills to retrieve grapes. Pretty cool stuff.


The mountains in Carrara look as though certain sections have been heavily snowed on while other sections haven’t even accumulated a skiff. These mountains have been mined for their marble for over 2000 years, numerous building are made of marble from Carrara and famous sculptures such as Micheal Angelo and Bernini have sculpted with the same marble. Marble is still being mined, though through more advanced techniques. The very famous David statue was sculpted with marble from Carrara.
